Dr. Katia Kontrogianni received her Diploma in Biology from the University of Patras, Patras, Greece in 1992, and her Ph.D. in Cell Biology from Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas in 1997. After a post-doctoral training in the Department of Hematology at Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine she joined the Department of Physiology at University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMAB) as an Academic Fellow in 2001, where she was promoted to Assistant Professor in 2003. During her stay in the Department of Physiology she also served as the Director of the Biacore Facility. In August of 2007, Dr. Kontrogianni moved to the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UMAB. Her research interests lie in the broad area of biomedical sciences and concern the application of modern molecular, cellular and biochemical methodologies to muscle biology.
Dr. Kontrogianni's work has been continually funded by several organizations, including the American Heart Association, the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the National Institutes of Health. Her work has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, and she currently holds one patent. Dr Kontrogianni has been invited to present her research in national and international meetings.
