Dr. Burkett is a graduate of Western Washington University (B.S. Biology/Chemistry), University of Maryland -Baltimore County (M.S. Applied Molecular Biology), and
University of Maryland-College Park (Ph.D. Microbiology). Prior to joining CCBC, Dr. Burkett held academic and industrial research appointments at The Center of Marine Biotechnology, Proteinix, Inc., IGEN, Inc., and the National Cancer Institute’s basic research program in Frederick, MD. His research activities have focused on transposable elements and genome evolution, ubiquitin-dependent protein processing, and industrial biotechnology and protein synthesis. Tom’s educational interests lie in the application of experiential education models to science education and technical workforce development.
Dr. Burkett is a member of the Society of Industrial Microbiology, American Society of Microbiology, Genetics Society of America, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He lives in Catonsville, MD with his wife Susan and when not in the classroom or laboratory enjoys spending time kayaking and sailing on the Chesapeake Bay.
